A charity that provides seriously ill people with special days out has been given a boost at a Canotec-backed fundraising soccer match in Dorset.
The digital photocopiers dealership sponsored the fixture between Queens Park Athletic FC in Bournemouth and an All-Stars side made up of former soccer professionals.
An estimated 200 people turned out to watch the game today (Sunday, April 25th) which ended 4-4, at the King George V Playing Field in Ferndown.
Half the money raised from the event, as well as a raffle and other related activities, is earmarked for the Willow Foundation set up by former TV presenter and ex-Arsenal goalie Bob Wilson and wife Megs in memory of their daughter, Anna ‘Willow’ Wilson, who died of cancer aged 31.
The Hatfield-based charity lays on treats for people aged 16 to 40 with life-threatening conditions, with more than 5,500 special days so far.
Queens Park Athletic, which is celebrating 75 years and is sponsored by Canotec, will benefit from the other half of the fundraising.
Steve Goodman of Canotec, a defender for Queens Park Athletic and who played on the day, said: “It was a fantastic event with a big crowd and a great atmosphere, with the blue Canotec banners fluttering in the wind by the pitch entrance to the clubhouse.
“This was also a unique chance for us to play against the soccer stars of our youth! More importantly, good money has been raised for the Willow Foundation and Queens Park Athletic, who we continue to sponsor in our commitment to grass roots sport.”
Former professionals who appeared included Russell Beardsmore (AFC Bournemouth and Manchester United), Matty Holmes (AFC Bournemouth, West Ham, Charlton and Blackburn), Richard Cooke (AFC Bournemouth, Spurs, Birmingham and Luton) and Paul Morrell (AFC Bournemouth).
Both teams were led out between the Canotec banners before lining up for the National Anthem, played by Poole Dolphin March Band.
So far up to £1,300 has been raised, with monies still coming in.
